Every week political pundits publish books promoting one side (the pundit’s) as good, and the other side as evil. Whether the pundit promotes a liberal or conservative view, the book convinces zealots, and annoys everyone else.
For the rest of us… we see the problem… we feel the problem. Psychologists teach us why and how the problem exists. Politicians leverage the problem to gain personal political advantage.
The problem is political polarization. Once one side becomes convinced that only its view is right, good, and moral, the other side must be defeated.
Engineering Unity identifies contentious issues we face as a nation. The author outlines perspectives and solutions offered by the political left and the political right. Schuster then offers an objective center from which to consider the arguments made by each side.
Unlike books published by psychologists, political analysts, and zealots, Engineering Unity is written from an engineer’s perspective. Engineers identify and solve all sorts of problems in the real world with objectivity, pragmatism, and minimal drama. As elusive as consensus solutions to political problems may seem, there are nonetheless solutions that can work for both sides. Engineering Unity shows that if we can rid ourselves of political polarization, coherent solutions will emerge.
If you are a committed liberal or conservative, Engineering Unity will be a difficult read. If you lean left or right, you will learn things that may draw you closer to the center. If you are a moderate centrist, you will see that you have a place in our political discourse.

This book has been written and is in the editing stage as I write this introduction. There is a chapter on each politically polarizing topic that keeps us divided. In each chapter, I lay out the topic as objectively as I can. I then state the political position taken by the left, the right, and the center. The reader will be asked to pick the position that best represents their view. The chapters include:
Introduction
Worldview Polarization
Immigration
War & The Military
Energy & Climate Change
Black Justice
The Economy
Gender Identity & Sexual Orientation
Abortion
Healthcare
Gun Control
Criminal Justice
Education
The Media
Your Political Leaning Score
Political Polarization
Ending Political Polarization
Prior to writing this book, I solicited input from the Left, the Right, and the Middle through a comprehensive questionnaire.
